A brushless DC electric motor (BLDC motor or BL motor), also known as electronically commutated motor (ECM or EC motor) and synchronous DC motors, are synchronous motors powered by direct current (DC) electricity via an inverter or switching power supply which produces electricity in the form of alternating current (AC) to drive each phase of the motor via a closed loop controller. The controller provides pulses of current to the motor windings that control the speed and torque of the motor. This control system replaces the commutator (brushes) used in many conventional electric motors.

How do I know if my brushless motor is bad?
You can check continuity across the motor leads, any probs with windings would show up there. If it won't run when iots hooked up, check batt voltage and then checkvoltage at esc motor leads - they should be real close. If the voltage is diff, may be teh esc, if voltage is almost the same, its prob motor.
Are brushless motors waterproof?
There are two types of brushless motors—sensored and sensorless. While there are some sensorless motors labeled as waterproof, it is highly advised that you do no submerge these motors or even subject them to extremely wet conditions unless you are prepared for and know how to perform motor disassembly and maintenance.
